I did not take a before picture. It would have been too mortifying for me to show the world my clothing disaster zone. Suffice to say it was a minimalist project I did not think I could tackle and I felt guilty downsizing my kids clothes.... seems mean somehow. But in the end my desire for organization and a more manageable amount of clothes won out. I know for us that if a person has 16 shirts, that is how many shirts will be dirty at one time before the laundry situation reaches the "URGENT MUST WASH CLOTHES TODAY" stage. If you take that same 16 shirts and multiply them times 12 people (we actually have16 people here right now but 4 of them pretty much do their own laundry) and add in the underwear, pants, socks, towels, bedding... well you know what my laundry area looked like. Once every couple weeks I would spend a marathon two days in the dungeon catching it all up (I know, shameful.)
I was ruthless as I downsized, keeping only what was really useful, and in very good condition. Notice that the shelves in the front are no longer there. And summer clothes, beach towel, swimsuit, sandals, baseball cleats, for 10 children are in those plastic bins on the right, each with the name of its kiddo on it. :) No more giant clothes sort in the Spring. And I can see at a glance who may need a shirt or two or perhaps who DOESN'T need a shirt or two.
On the other wood unit are winter clothes for 8 kids (I let two older, hopefully neater-by-now kids take their clothes to their room). Each bin is labelled with the child's name. Every piece of clothing (except outwear) they need is in this bin. Each kiddo has several pairs of pants, several shirts, sweaters, socks and underwear. If something new comes along, and their bin is full to the brim, said child can pick something to pass on or say goodbye to.
At the end of the winter season I will have 10 more bins. Into each will go each child's coat, snowpants, boots, mittens, hat, scarf, ice skates and ski boots for the NEXT winter. No more searching through boxes and boxes of winter stuff to see if there is something for each child. --Perhaps most of you are already this organized. If so, God bless you and please keep it to yourself ;)
I ruthlessly went through the blankets and sheets and used one of the old shelves for matched sheets and an old TV cabinet thingy for blankets and mattress pads. The purple sheet you see in the background is covering a rod filled with hanging type clothes, girls dresses, boys dress shirts, etc.
And now my laundry area looks like this:
And that is truly all the laundry I have had at the end of the day for this whole week. Now to see if this plan has staying power...

Wow Wow Wow!!!! That is so beautiful! When can you come over and do mine? I am slowly picking away at my messy basement, but even in my dreams it could not look as organized as yours. I love how it is so neat you won't be afraid to go down there when you are tired. At least, that is what happens to me; all the things that are left undone scream out as I walk past them and so I avoid the basement, which makes more work later.
Congratulations!
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! What a great use of space:) Thanks for sharing!!
You amaze me. You're only the second mother I've ever known to get the laundry under control, but the other one only has two laundry-using kids. I don't believe the Lord cares about laundry, but my gut reaction when I saw the photos was that he must have given you a hand anyway. :) Keep up the good work!
Amazing! Good job. I bet the kids feel special to have their very own bin of clothing.

Wonderful!! Didn't it feel good when you were done?
I have a junky looking, enclosed porch that we use as a storage room and I have to reorganize/dejunk it at least every 4-6 weeks or so. It seems to be the catch all and I usually end up with several bags of stuff to eliminate (outgrown clothes from the youngest boy and girl mostly) each time. It amazes me how quickly things accumulate, even when I'm making a VERY conscious effort not to bring more stuff into the house.
I think we need to be ruthless when it comes to decluttering the clothes for our kids. They seem to be overwhelmed by what they have and we are the ones who want them to dress nicely, they'd be happy with one or two outfits and I still don't think the clothes would end up in the drawers!!
Beautiful room! Do you give your kids access to the bins, or do you dole out clothes daily?
My kids have dressers but they are always messy. I can't stand messy drawers. They each have a plastic bin on top of their dresser where I put their clean clothes. Whenever I am doing laundry, if a child's bin is not empty, then his/her dirty clothes do not get washed because I would have no place to put them once they are clean. This system is kind of working, when a child's clean bin and dirty bin are both full and he/she has run out of underwear...
I like your system ALOT. Looks great. You are blessed with space to set up a system like that.
Thank you everyone for your kind comments :) The system is still working! And there just hasn't been near the laundry to do in the first place, so it hasn't been too difficult to keep up on it. I DO let the kids get their own clothes out of the bins, but I try to have a big kid down there when they do it. As my soldier/son said, they can make a mess, but at least it is somewhat contained :)
2busyannie: That is EXACTLY what happens to me. I just get so unhappy and tired with the messes that I just avoid them. It has been months since the whole place was clean all at the same time...sigh
