There is a milkweed patch we know of on the way home from Duluth. Some old, pretty much lost touch with them, friends showed it to us years ago. Back then we picked a bunch of the leaves, made sure we got several Monarch caterpillars, put them in our live bait box (wood box with hardware cloth sides) and waited. Within in two weeks they ate themselves into giants, made their chrysalis and turned into beautiful butterflies.
I have thought to stop again many, many times, as I have another group of kids that have never seen the neat metamorphosis of the monarch. Pete and I finally did stop. The milkweeds were still there, so we brought some home. Here is Reuben releasing the Monarch that took 13 days from caterpillar to butterfly.
